Appeal overturns correction order against Rotterdam councillor

The Court of Appeal in The Hague ruled in an urgent appeal that Rotterdam councillor Kevin van Eikeren of PRO does not have to correct remarks he made about entrepreneur and amusement-park operator Wim Beelen. The ruling overturned an earlier decision that had required Van Eikeren to post a correction on Instagram and LinkedIn within 72 hours and to pay more than €1,850 in legal costs. The costs of the appeal proceedings were instead ordered against Beelen. The court's reasoning has not yet been published. Van Eikeren had said that Beelen presented himself as a benefactor through his amusement park while acting for financial gain, and alleged that Beelen had tried to influence Amsterdam political parties through large donations. The earlier court found those statements unlawful and insufficiently supported. Beelen had also sought a ban, backed by a penalty, on similar future statements, but that request was not granted.
