Public consultation on designs for the new Meervaart theatre
◆2 sources
Amsterdam presented five preliminary designs by architectural teams for a new Meervaart theatre and the landscaping of the southern shore of the Sloterplas in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Residents, business owners, visitors and other stakeholders can respond through 29 October via a questionnaire and displays at the waterfront, the current Meervaart theatre and online.
A committee of nine local residents and stakeholders will pass on the responses to a selection committee, which is to choose an agency to further design and build the project by the end of the year. The municipality did not specify how much weight public responses will carry, but said there must be consensus on the design. Some residents remain opposed, arguing that construction would take too much green space and lake area, while others favour retaining and renovating the current theatre. The chosen preliminary design may be amended before construction, which is expected to begin in 2029.
