PSV-Feyenoord carries implications for 2029 Club World Cup qualification
◆1 source
The PSV-Feyenoord match was reported to have significance beyond the Eredivisie standings because results in the Champions League from 2024 through 2028 are used for qualification for the 2029 Club World Cup. PSV stood provisionally 10th in the coefficient ranking, which would be enough for qualification, while Feyenoord was 15th with 25 points. PSV had 39 points after its victory over Porto, level with Club Brugge in 11th place, and only a maximum of two clubs from each country can qualify unless a club wins the Champions League.
The tournament is expected to feature 12 European clubs, including the Champions League winner and the highest-ranked clubs. Its 2025 edition had a prize pool of more than one billion dollars, and that amount was reported to be set to increase in 2029. The qualification requirements and other details of the next edition remain unclear. A Feyenoord win would have cut the gap between the teams to seven points in the league and could have improved Feyenoord’s position in the qualification race, while PSV was also due to face Club Brugge in the Champions League on November 4.
