Protest over planned bicycle ban at Oosterplas

The Fietsersbond in Bloemendaal protested at the Noord-Holland provincial government building in Haarlem against PWN’s plan to prohibit visitors from cycling to the Oosterplas from 1 April 2027. Marc van den Berg said the measure was unnecessary and called for better bicycle parking near the lake; the protest included bicycles, banners, bells and bubbles.
Under the plan, visitors would have to leave their bicycles at the Bleek en Berg entrance and walk about 700 metres to the swimming area during the period from 1 April to 1 October. PWN said the measure was needed to keep routes clear for emergency services, including firefighters using water from the lake to fight nature fires. It said extra bicycle storage was not possible because the Oosterplas lies in a protected Natura 2000 area, and that proposed alternatives had not proved feasible. Bicycles can still be parked near the lake in autumn and winter.
