A large armed group attacked the home of Jan G. in Overasselt on 1 September. Security guard Berry Leenders was shot dead, and two police officers responding to the scene were wounded in gunfire. Jan G. escaped with his family. Police have arrested 42 suspects, including three men arrested near Ghent, Belgium; Dutch authorities have requested their surrender. The suspected organiser has not been arrested. Jan G., who was the target of the attack, was arrested in Germany in September and has since been transferred to the Netherlands. He is suspected of involvement in an attempted import of nearly 4,000 kilograms of cocaine into France.
