Practical street for boa students at ROC Amsterdam

ROC Amsterdam in Zuidoost has opened a simulated street where students training to become municipal enforcement officers, or boas, can practise handling aggressive and conflict situations. Scenarios include disputes over parking, traffic violations and fights; students practise with teachers and one another, and actors are also brought in. Other students observe exercises through a one-way mirror.

The programme has doubled the time allocated to role-playing this year, at students’ request. The training lasts three years and graduates about 200 students each year. Higher-year students also learn in the simulated setting how and when to use a short baton; Mayor Halsema decided in 2024 to trial issuing the equipment to enforcement officers and wants to permit its permanent use by boas in the city centre.
