Possible mandatory compliance with vehicle recalls

One report said that more than 400,000 vehicles in the Netherlands may still have serious outstanding recall repairs, although the RDW says the exact number is uncertain because data on affected and repaired vehicles may be incomplete. It said about seven in ten open recalls concern safety equipment, and estimated that roughly 160,000 vehicles still have potentially dangerous Takata airbags. Repairs under recalls are free.

Infrastructure and Water Management Minister Karremans is considering requiring owners to comply with recall actions if vehicle registration and communication with owners cannot first be improved. The report said the RDW, the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate and automotive organisation Bovag support an obligation, while the Association of Insurers warned that continuing to drive with a known unresolved defect can, depending on the circumstances, affect insurance coverage.
