Cornell suspends fraternity events after rape allegations

9 sources

Cornell University suspended fraternity events for the rest of the academic year while it investigates fraternities, following criticism of its response to a former student's allegation that seven Chi Phi members raped her in 2024. The woman, who filed a civil case under the pseudonym Jane Doe, alleged that she had been drugged and was unable to consent; the accused men deny wrongdoing. Her lawyer said she has received threats, and one report said police were sent to her home after a false report of multiple killings there. University president Michael Kotlikoff said Cornell would commission independent investigations, review the role of fraternities and communicate more transparently. New York Attorney General Letitia James was appointed special prosecutor to review the case. Students held protests at Cornell, while demonstrations and online messages of support spread elsewhere in the United States under the #IAmJaneDoe slogan.
