Shooting in Trappes and La Verrière

A gunman opened fire from a vehicle in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, southwest of Paris, killing a 26-year-old man and injuring five others, including a 12-year-old girl. Three of the injured are in critical condition. The number of reported injured was initially four before being revised to five. The suspect was arrested near Coignières. France's anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened a terrorism investigation. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the attack may have had a racist motive, while President Emmanuel Macron called it an act of terror and said the victims had been targeted because of their religion and skin colour. A later single report said investigators believe the suspect targeted Black and Arab people, and that a suspected improvised explosive device was found in his apartment; it also said authorities are examining whether he had links to far-right groups.
