Plans for more than 15,000 homes reshape Almere city centre

Almere presented plans for a major transformation of its city centre, including more than 15,000 additional homes, expanded green space and a large city park along the canals. Residents were shown more than 20 projects at a city information centre, including redevelopment around Randstad 20-21, housing on the former exhibition site along Wisselweg and the Hortus neighbourhood near the former Floriade site.

The plans include turning the Grote Markt and Stadhuisplein into greener public spaces and adding trees and amenities. Residents welcomed the prospect of more greenery, housing, shops and activity, but some objected to possible effects on views and said residents should be more closely considered. The municipality said residents could respond to the plans and argued that additional homes, including student housing, would bring more life and activity to the centre, particularly in the evening.
