The Philadelphia 76ers beat the reigning champion New York Knicks 106-100 at Madison Square Garden in the NBA season opener. LeBron James made his 76ers debut and began his 24th NBA season, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Tyrese Maxey scored 28 points and Jaylen Brown added 19 for Philadelphia, while Jalen Brunson scored 21 for New York.
The Knicks raised their championship banner and handed out rings before the game. They led 58-54 at halftime, but Philadelphia took control in the third quarter and held its lead through the fourth. One report said Knicks fans booed James over his links to the team during the previous summer.
