PFAS soil washing installation planned at Schiphol Airport

A special soil-washing installation was being used at Schiphol Airport to clean a large amount of soil contaminated with PFAS, with the aim of making most of the soil reusable. The pollution was reported to have come partly from firefighting foam used during fire drills.

Independent PFAS expert Marc Verheul of Deltares raised questions about whether small water droplets could spread PFAS through the air and identified points requiring attention in the process of baking the treated material into bricks. The safety of the installation for nearby residents was being examined.
