Pension increases of up to 25 percent projected for two million retirees

About two million retired people in the Netherlands could receive higher pensions when 37 pension funds switch to the new pension system on 1 January 2027. An analysis by pension adviser Aon estimated that increases of 12 to 25 percent were possible, with an average increase of 17 percent among retirees in the ten largest funds examined. The group includes former civil servants, retail workers, transport workers, bank employees and metalworkers. The final increase may differ by fund, age and personal circumstances, and is expected to be calculated during 2027, with the first months’ increase paid retroactively.

The largest fund making the transition is ABP, which has more than three million participants, including about one million pensioners. Its coverage ratio was reported at 132 percent at the end of September, but ABP has not made its own projection. The expected increases remain dependent on developments before the transition, including interest rates and investment markets. A lower coverage ratio could reduce the amount available for distribution. Funds that switched to the new system the previous year also granted substantial one-off increases to pensioners, but further increases depend on investment performance.
