Paul Depla seeks another six-year term as Breda mayor

Breda mayor Paul Depla, 61, said he wanted to continue in the role for another six years after serving 12 years. He said he still had the energy for the job and remained motivated by contact with residents and the city’s challenges. Depla acknowledged criticism of his record and said that making unpopular decisions was part of being mayor. He also discussed the 2023–2024 New Year’s riots in Hoge Vucht, saying residents had been left without adequate protection, and defended his approach to homelessness and nuisance while stressing the need to protect public safety.

For a further term, Depla said he wanted to reduce divisions among Breda residents, create more opportunities for young people, improve facilities in vulnerable neighbourhoods and help develop the former sugar factory site known as ’t Zoet into a new district. He said he wanted residents with different identities to maintain connections with one another and indicated that he did not see a reason to seek a different position.
