Paris businesses prepare for possible new unrest

Paris shopkeepers and restaurateurs boarded up or closed premises ahead of a planned day of protests, following looting and damage during unrest the previous week. Some bought pepper spray, tear gas or other means of protection, while saying they did not expect the authorities to prevent further damage. A separate report noted that closures also mean lost revenue.

Authorities deployed 70,000 police officers, along with armoured vehicles and water cannons, and banned many demonstrations. In Paris, a trade-union march was initially permitted, but police later banned its planned route from Place de la Bastille to Place de la Nation and proposed a route on outer boulevards instead. Unions challenged the change, while left-wing parties criticised the restrictions on demonstrations.
