Nuenen monastery set to reopen after renovation

The monastery in the centre of Nuenen is set to reopen after a municipal renovation costing an estimated €15 million to €20 million. The municipality decided to fund the work after years of discussions, following earlier periods of vacancy, decay and two bankruptcies. An annual subsidy is also planned.

An association chaired by Bram Soetendal will run the building, with 21 organisations—including a music school, dance schools, a theatre group and the library—expected to use it. The monastery, which was threatened with demolition before residents helped secure its monument status, is due to open its doors on Sunday.
