North Korea launches about ten ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan

North Korea launched about ten ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean army. The launches came amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following North Korean missile tests earlier in the month and a South Korean test of what was described as a hypersonic weapon. North Korea responded to that test with another missile launch, according to the account.

Tensions have also increased along the border. Three South Korean soldiers were injured last month by landmine explosions while clearing a route for an inspection. An investigation by the South Korean army and the UN Command in Korea reportedly identified the mine as North Korean-made, but it remained unclear whether it had been deliberately placed on the South Korean side. North Korea denied involvement. The country has also strengthened the border with weapons, barbed wire and fences. Its growing military cooperation with Russia is reportedly providing combat experience and technological knowledge, including in drone warfare, while South Korea’s drone division is undergoing reorganisation.

North Korea’s plan to restore border propaganda loudspeakers

North Korea said it plans to restore propaganda loudspeakers along its border with South Korea within days and has put military units in firing positions, according to Kim Yo-jong, sister of leader Kim Jong-un. She also said North Korea would continue strengthening the border and referred to new countermeasures. The statement followed accusations by a South Korean presidential adviser that North Korea had laid mines which injured South Korean soldiers, and a call not to escalate through loudspeaker broadcasts. North Korea had previously said it was considering deploying more weapons along the border. It remains unclear whether the loudspeakers will be switched on once they are installed.

Kim Jong-un visits China to mark wartime cooperation

1 source

Kim Jong-un made a brief visit to China, where he was received by Wang Huning, a member of China’s top political leadership. Together they laid a wreath at a monument commemorating resistance against the United States and Chinese assistance during the Korean War. Kim also visited a car factory in the border city of Dandong and then returned home. He was reported to have entered China by road via the recently opened Yalu River bridge, rather than by his usual armored train. The visit was presented as another sign of improving ties between China and North Korea. Contacts, trade links and transport connections between the countries have increased after years of limited interaction. The rapprochement comes as North Korea is also expanding cooperation with Russia. The visit was said to make a possible meeting between Kim and US President Donald Trump less likely, although Trump had repeatedly raised the prospect of talks and an upcoming APEC forum in China had been considered a possible opportunity.
