The recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize was due to be announced in Norway, with the expectation that US President Donald Trump would not receive it. The previous year’s prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her commitment to promoting democratic rights in Venezuela. Trump had said he was the rightful winner and claimed to have ended eight wars. Machado later offered her prize to Trump during a visit to the White House, but the Nobel Institute said that a Nobel Prize could not be revoked, shared or transferred to someone else.
