The municipality of Almere had received eight complaints about road safety at the intersection of the J.H. van ’t Hofflaan and the Marie Curielaan in the Nobelhorst district before a fatal crash in June. A 14-year-old boy was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter and later died in hospital. The complaints reportedly concerned unsafe conditions for cyclists, including children, and cars driving too fast.
The municipality said it had assessed the traffic situation through observations by traffic controllers and had taken measures, but had not conducted a separate road safety investigation or analysis resulting in a report. After the crash, the intersection was further modified with narrowed lanes and additional speed bumps. Its visibility for cyclists and pedestrians was improved, and students could avoid the crossing via a cycling route.
