New Mexico privacy penalty against Meta

A judge in the US state of New Mexico ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion penalty for misleading Facebook users about privacy and access to their personal data. State prosecutors alleged that Meta had falsely denied that other parties could gain broad access to that data.

One report said the ruling followed a September jury finding that Meta had made misleading statements about access to user data and involved more than 43 million violations of New Mexico consumer law. It also said the money is intended for education in the state.
