New lookout tower planned for Hollandse Hout

A new design is being developed for a lookout tower in Hollandse Hout near Lelystad after the earlier wooden design was considered too vulnerable to vandalism and misuse and too costly to maintain. The 2025 design, developed by Rotterdam-based Walden, was for a 30-metre-high tower costing about €2 million, with the municipality of Lelystad expected to contribute €500,000. It would offer views of the Oostvaardersplassen and the surrounding area.
The municipality and Staatsbosbeheer are now working on an alternative design, drawing on lookout towers elsewhere in Nieuw Land National Park, including a lower tower in the Oostvaardersplassen and one on the Marker Wadden. The municipality had estimated annual maintenance costs of €50,000 to €100,000 over 30 years, but those costs could rise. The new proposal, including the costs and the division of responsibilities, is expected to be submitted to the municipal council before summer and must remain within the previously agreed €2 million budget.
