New DNA lead in the murder of Sjef Leukel

A pilot by the Public Prosecution Service and the Netherlands Forensic Institute using consent-based private DNA databases produced a new lead in the 2004 murder of Sjef Leukel in Berg en Terblijt. Leukel was killed and his wife seriously injured after an unknown man entered their home.

DNA searches identified two possible relatives of the unknown perpetrator in the United States. A request for legal assistance has been sent to the US to pursue the lead. The method, used in six cases since 2023 and yielding new leads in two, is to be used more often in homicide and other serious cases when no other leads remain and with permission from an investigating judge.
