Minke Booij faces the loss of overnight care for her disabled son

Former top hockey player Minke Booij said that overnight stays at a care facility in Dussen for her 13-year-old son Lode would soon end because he requires more supervision than the facility can provide. Lode has a rare KCNQ2 gene variation, a severe intellectual disability and high physical mobility; he cannot speak or use the toilet independently and needs supervision whenever he is awake. The family has not yet found a suitable alternative, and Lode is on about four waiting lists while Booij visits possible facilities.
The overnight stays give the family time to care for Booij’s older son, manage the household and maintain their own activities. Booij said the family may have to make major changes if suitable care is not found, including her working less or stopping work. She is also considering the possibility of permanent residential care, although she would prefer to keep Lode at home and continue her own life alongside caring for her family.
