Memory trees planned for six villages ahead of merger with Hilversum

The municipality of Wijdemeren is planning six native trees, each surrounded by a steel ring, in Ankeveen, Breukeleveen, 's-Graveland, Kortenhoef, Nederhorst den Berg and Loosdrecht. A seventh tree, described as a connection tree, is planned in Hilversum. The trees are due to be planted on 7 November to commemorate Wijdemeren's merger with Hilversum on 1 January, which will create the new municipality of Hilversum. Residents chose the locations.
The rings form a poem written for the merger by Hans and Monique Hagen, with verses tailored to the villages' natural features. The artwork was made by Joost Zwagerman, and the mayors of Wijdemeren and Hilversum symbolically welded part of it together. Some residents welcomed the project, while others said the merger could weaken the villages' identities or questioned the expense and usefulness of the trees.
