Mariska de Jong wins world championship in nipple-areola tattooing

Mariska de Jong of Breda won the nipple-areola reconstruction category at the World Universal League of Permanent Makeup competition in Antalya, Turkey. She competed against 57 other participants, tattooing a latex piece from memory within an hour. Judges assessed such factors as size, colour, depth, hygiene and neatness. De Jong had previously won the Benelux championship in September, which qualified her for the world competition.

De Jong creates lifelike nipple-areola tattoos for people who have undergone breast surgery. She said the recognition could draw more attention to the work. Following attention after her Benelux title, hospitals had approached her about possible cooperation; she said this could potentially help secure insurance reimbursement, though no arrangement has been finalised.
