Maite Karssenberg won the Libris History Prize for her biography Double Life: Geertruida Kapteyn-Muysken and Her Rebellious Philosophy of Life. Jury chair Frits Spits presented the €20,000 prize during a special broadcast of the VPRO radio programme OVT.
The jury praised the book’s original form and its portrayal of Kapteyn-Muysken, a 19th-century freethinker and feminist. It said the biography showed women’s severely subordinate position at the time and took readers along in Karssenberg’s search for its subject. Karssenberg based the book on archival research including three diaries and hundreds of letters left by Kapteyn-Muysken.
