Mahmoud, a 56-year-old Syrian who fled the war, held a senior position in the oil and gas industry three years ago. He now works in a supermarket, a job below his previous level, but says he is happy to have it because he had not been able to find other work without a residence permit. He said the job gave him a renewed sense of purpose in life.
