Maastricht University cancels Jewish student meeting
◆1 source
Maastricht University cancelled a meeting organized by the Jewish student association IJAR and the pro-Israeli organization StandWithUs. Lecturer Eli Sapir was due to speak about “Three years after 7 October,” referring to Hamas’s attacks in 2023. The university said it could not guarantee security after pro-Palestinian groups announced opposition to the meeting, information about Sapir was shared online, and StandWithUs called on supporters to come to Maastricht.
The university described the situation as an accumulation of risks and said an online meeting had been offered. The organizers said the cancellation was communicated less than an hour before the event and accused the university of intimidation and of systematically suppressing Jewish student life on campus. They said it was the third cancellation of an event involving Jewish students at the university. They declined the online alternative.
