Life-size deer silhouettes installed along Flevoland roads

Life-size black silhouettes of deer and fallow deer are being installed along roads in Flevoland to warn motorists about wildlife crossings. The first seven of 15 planned signs were due to be placed over the weekend, in cooperation with road managers and on roads including the Dronterweg, Zuigerplasdreef in Lelystad, Spiekweg in Zeewolde, and the Buitenring and Godendreef in Almere. A fallow deer silhouette is being used in Zeewolde, where the animals occur. The remaining eight signs will be installed later.

The initiative comes after 582 registered collisions involving wild animals in Flevoland in 2025, including 359 involving deer; the actual number may be higher because not all collisions are reported. The signs are intended to make drivers more alert, although it has not been established whether these specific silhouettes reduce collisions. The initiative’s organizers said speed and changing traffic times around the transition to winter time also affect the risk, while wildlife is most active around dawn and dusk.
