Lelystad neighbourhood safety survey

A municipal survey conducted between September and December found that 32% of more than 2,000 respondents in Lelystad sometimes felt unsafe in their own neighbourhood, up from 23% in 2023. Eight percent often felt unsafe. Feelings of insecurity were particularly high among people aged under 34 and among women.

The city centre had the highest reported level of insecurity, with 58% sometimes feeling unsafe, followed by Lelycentre and the Zuiderzeewijk at 48%, Waterwijk at 46%, and Centrum-Noord and Atolwijk-West at 45%. Respondents also reported avoiding places or routes they considered unsafe, and many said they did not feel comfortable walking in their neighbourhood at night. The municipal executive sent the survey findings to the city council; whether and how they will be discussed is for council members to decide.
