King Haakon’s first official visit to Narvik

Norway’s royal family gradually resumed official duties after mourning King Harald, who died on 28 August. The mourning period ended on 9 October; larger journeys and state visits are not planned for the autumn and winter. Queen Mother Sonja returned to public duties with a visit to the National Archives in Oslo, where messages, drawings and letters left at the palace after Harald’s death are being kept. King Haakon made his first official working visit as monarch to Narvik, where he thanked the public for its support following his father’s death and spoke about the royal family’s grief. He said he misses his conversations with Harald and was still finding his way in his new role. A single report said the visit focused on total defence, democracy, volunteering and building safe, strong local communities. Sonja was moved from the royal house’s list of members on its website to the list of other royal family members.
