Lazio was reported to be experiencing the best start to a season in the club’s history and could move to the top of Serie A that night. Despite this, the stands at the club’s matches remained largely empty because of a boycott against owner Claudio Lotito.

The reported standoff involved the club’s strong sporting results and the supporters’ continued absence. It was unclear how long the boycott would last.
