Review of the Lelylijn’s construction and financing

The cabinet asked former De Nederlandsche Bank president Klaas Knot and an advisory committee to reassess how the Lelylijn could be built and financed. They will examine alternative funding, including possible investment by pension funds and the European Investment Bank, as well as adjustments or alternatives to the planned route from Lelystad via the Noordoostpolder to the north. The proposed line is intended to link Lelystad and Groningen, possibly with a station in Emmeloord.

No additional money is currently available, despite Knot having earlier proposed setting aside €400 million annually. The line’s cost is estimated at €15 billion. Remaining funds previously reserved for the project will stay in place, but construction has not been decided. The committee is expected to issue recommendations by next summer, after which the cabinet will decide on the next steps.
