Julian Brandt was absent from Ajax training on the day before the club’s Conference League match against FC Midtjylland. The midfielder had been injured in the match against AZ and was rested. Sofyan Amrabat also appeared likely to miss the game.

Ajax opened its Conference League league phase with a 2-1 away defeat to Hajduk Split in Croatia. Abdoulie Sanyang put Hajduk ahead, Davy Klaassen equalised after half-time, and Marin Šotiček restored the home side’s lead soon afterwards. The match was briefly interrupted in the second half when fireworks and smoke from the home supporters obstructed visibility. Ajax had a chance to equalise when substitute Oscar Gloukh hit the bar after play resumed, but did not score again. Ajax then recorded its first Conference League win, beating Atalanta 2-0. Substitutes Tolu Arokodare and Abdellah Ouazane scored late goals after a match that had remained goalless for most of the evening. Ajax now has three points from its first two league-phase matches.
