Joanne van Lieshout prepares for World Judo Championships

Judoka Joanne van Lieshout, 23, is preparing for the World Judo Championships in Baku after training in Japan. She enters the tournament as the 2024 world champion and the reigning European champion. Van Lieshout said she feels physically and mentally ready. She previously struggled with expectations after winning the world title in 2024, but has returned after what was described as a necessary break and says she is now able to handle the pressure surrounding the championships.

Joanne van Lieshout reached the semi-finals of the under-63kg category at the World Judo Championships in Baku after defeating Czech judoka Renata Zachová by yuko in the quarter-finals. The 23-year-old Dutch judoka then lost by ippon to Japan's Haruka Kaju in the semi-finals. Van Lieshout subsequently lost the bronze-medal contest to Mongolia's Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo, leaving the Dutch team without its first medal of the championships.

Eight Dutch women and three Dutch men are set to compete at the World Judo Championships in Baku the following week. Among the women is Sanne van Dijke, who has recently become a mother, and who is due to compete in the up-to-70-kilogram category alongside fellow Dutch judoka Margit de Voogd.
