Jesse Klaver rejects the prospect of early elections despite strong polling

PRO leader Jesse Klaver said he would be willing to become prime minister if his party became the largest in an election, but that he did not want elections to be held soon. He said another election and coalition formation would delay the formation of a government and would not be good for the Netherlands. PRO is currently in opposition, while polls put the party at about 30 seats in the House of Representatives.

Klaver also described the reported 25% public confidence in politics as worrying and said politicians were responsible for restoring trust. He said misinformation, including AI-generated articles and videos, made that difficult. In opposition, he said, PRO was seeking to contribute constructively; he cited preventing planned cuts to benefits for people who become unemployed or ill as an example.

Yesilgöz seeks to lead the VVD into the next election

7 sources

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz said after a party meeting in Veghel that she wants to be her party’s lead candidate in the next election. She said she remains committed to cooperation with Pro, but not without the right-wing party JA21; she added that cooperation with Pro on specific issues could be possible. Her announcement came amid internal criticism of the VVD’s direction and weak polling. Yesilgöz said criticism within the party should not be dismissed, but described the Veghel meeting with roughly 150 members as constructive and rejected the view that the VVD is pursuing a left-wing agenda. A party congress at the end of November is expected to show whether party leaders have reassured critical members.

Funding dispute over the Box 3 capital gains tax reform

16 sources

The cabinet plans to introduce a tax on actual returns from savings, investments and second homes in Box 3 from 2028, including taxation of investment gains when assets are sold. It withdrew proposals that would have made smaller savers and investors contribute to financing the change after they lacked support in the House of Representatives. The change leaves a multibillion-euro budget gap, and the cabinet is seeking alternatives with opposition parties.
