Jared Kushner’s diplomatic role raises conflict-of-interest concerns

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, has been involved in negotiations concerning peace in Ukraine, Gaza and Iran despite holding no formal government position. His private investments in areas connected to those negotiations have raised concerns about possible conflicts of interest, while he is not required to disclose those business interests in the same way as a government official. Kushner has also been involved in agreements including a deal concerning Russian oil assets and military-related companies supplying Israel have reportedly benefited from the conflict in Iran.

An investigation reportedly led to an official charge against Kushner, although it remains unclear whether he will be convicted. Legal expert Hui Chen said conflicts of interest among senior officials were not new, while journalist Andrea Bernstein argued that Kushner’s combination of diplomatic influence and private business interests made the situation unusually difficult to assess. The issue could come under greater political pressure if Democrats gain control of Congress in the midterm elections.
