Jan Latten links asylum migration to pressure on social housing

Demographer Jan Latten said that the arrival of 1.1 million additional inhabitants from abroad over the past ten years had increased pressure on the Dutch housing market. He said finding a home remained difficult despite persistent calls for more construction, and argued that asylum migration increasingly affected access to social housing.
Latten also referred to a 2023 visit by a UN special rapporteur, who said the growing housing shortage had little to do with immigration and was mainly caused by insufficient housing construction.
