Guido Weijers and Elise van der Horst became frustrated while trying to reach a checkpoint in Race Across the World. They chose the subway, but Weijers grew impatient when a ticket desk employee did not provide the help they wanted and appeared not to understand the explanation. In a later episode, a dispute over a 26-dollar debt escalated when Weijers, van der Horst, Vince Brinkhuijsen and Irene van de Laar met on a train after waiting almost three weeks to settle the matter. Weijers confronted van de Laar about repayment and warned that things could otherwise become unpleasant. The accounts give conflicting ages for van de Laar; the later one lists her as 57.

Irene van de Laar, 57, is taking part in Race Across The World with her 19-year-old son, Vince Brinkhuijsen. They were reported to have been the first team to leave for Udon Thani in Thailand, while Guido Weijers and Elise van der Horst followed closely behind. As the teams approached one of the final stages, the last team to arrive faced elimination, and Van de Laar overlooked an important rule, causing her to panic and threatening her planned strategy. Van de Laar was also reported to have faced substantial criticism over her participation. In an Instagram message, she looked back on the adventure and said the criticism affected her. She stressed that Guido Weijers had already repaid the money that had been advanced.
