Cemil Tugay, the mayor of İzmir, reportedly switched to the AKP, the party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. İzmir is a stronghold of the opposition and Turkey’s third-largest city. Erdoğan welcomed Tugay at a parliamentary meeting that was broadcast live on television.
