Italy’s plan for personalised vehicle licence plates

Italy’s government said drivers will be allowed to personalise vehicle licence plates from 2027, in a measure intended to raise public revenue. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the plan alongside the 2027 budget. A personalised plate is expected to cost €600 for a car and €360 for a motorcycle, although it remains unclear how far drivers may depart from the current plate format.
The proposal drew mockery and criticism on social media, where critics said the government should instead address rising living costs. Taxi drivers were reported to welcome the measure because personalised plates could make approved suppliers easier to identify, while others raised concerns that plates could contain offensive wording. The government has not said how much revenue it expects the plan to generate.
