An Iranian fishing vessel was reportedly attacked and overpowered by Somali pirates northeast of Somalia, between Bandar Bayla and Hafun. The EU mission responsible for maritime security in the western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea said 23 people were aboard, while a Puntland Maritime Police employee said 12 pirates had boarded the vessel, named the Azini. The crew reportedly consisted of 21 Iranians and two Somali security guards. Their condition was unclear, and the vessel was reportedly approaching a commercial shipping route.
The EU mission was investigating and urged nearby ships to watch for suspicious activity and report it. It warned that the vessel could be used as a base for further attacks. The mission also said there had been five pirate attacks off Somalia in recent months, with one vessel still under pirate control. In a separate hijacking in late September, five crew members were reportedly killed shortly before a liberation operation.
