An investigation identified more than 200 online pharmacies where medicines used for weight loss could be bought without a prescription, although the medicines were not intended for that purpose. Most of the websites had gone online in 2026.

The investigation included ordering a package and speaking with a user who became ill. Hospital pharmacist Corine Bethlehem of Erasmus MC explained the dangers of the illegal trade.
