FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned racist abuse directed at Surinamese footballers by Guatemalan supporters during a Nations League match in Guatemala. He called the conduct completely unacceptable and said action would be taken. Suriname lost 1-0 to Guatemala in Guatemala City after conceding in the sixth minute of stoppage time and missed the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals. A draw would have been enough, but the defeat left Suriname third in its group on goal difference. Richonell Margaret was sent off after about an hour. The Surinamese football association said its players were subjected to racist monkey chants from spectators throughout the match and intends to take action. After the final whistle, goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was involved in an altercation with Guatemalan players and made obscene gestures towards opposing fans; his club director said he did not want to draw conclusions before hearing Vaessen’s account.
