At the start of 2026, 8.2 million adults in the Netherlands were registered in the Donor Register, more than 90,000 more than a year earlier, according to Statistics Netherlands.

The increase was entirely among people who had made no choice. Under the Donor Act as amended in 2020, people in the Netherlands who do not make a choice from the age of 18 are automatically registered as organ donors.
