Increase in opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan

The UN reported that the area used for opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan had nearly quadrupled over a year to about 43,000 hectares, despite a Taliban ban introduced in 2022. The area remains well below the roughly 200,000 hectares reported before the ban. The UN said dried opium now sells for more than $500 per kilogram, compared with about $100 before the ban.
