Germany’s governing parties agreed to nominate Ilse Aigner of the CSU to succeed Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, with a formal announcement expected on Monday. Aigner, 61, has not yet responded. The reports say she would be Germany’s first female federal president and its first from Bavaria.

Aigner has served as president of the Bavarian parliament for eight years and was previously agriculture minister in two Merkel cabinets. The federal presidential election is due to take place in January, with the new president taking office in March.
