IJtunnel to close for about 18 months for major maintenance

The IJtunnel in Amsterdam is due to close to all motorists from July 2027 for approximately one and a half years. Project manager Michael Prinsen said the work will replace camera, broadcasting, ventilation and lighting systems that are about 20 years old and described as obsolete. Both tunnel tubes must close at the same time because the energy supply will also be replaced.

The work is expected to take so long because of the kilometres of cable in the tunnel and the need to retest the new cables and systems. The closure is expected to cause major traffic disruption, with journey times during rush hour potentially reaching at least one hour. Prinsen advised people to consider cycling, public transport or alternative working arrangements.
