IJmuiden is celebrating what has been described as its 150th anniversary with a special musical and a party on 1945 Square. Pastry chef Barry, who has worked in the city for more than 20 years, created a cake called The Channel Digger, referring to the construction of the North Sea Canal. Magician Hans Klok helped with the project after unexpectedly visiting Barry’s shop, leading to a widely viewed Instagram video.
The cake is shaped to represent a canal, with apricot compote and chocolate marked with “150 years.” Barry had 750 pieces prepared and expected them to be popular. Employee Lizzy said they now had to sell them, but was confident they would succeed.
