Two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Spain’s province of Toledo, on the Madrid-Andalusia line. The death toll, initially reported at at least 10 and later 64, rose to 68. A single report said 58 people were hospitalized, including 15 in critical condition. Earlier reports put the number injured at more than 80, including 50 seriously injured. Rail traffic on the line was suspended.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a Renfe high-speed train had been authorised by traffic control to proceed despite a red signal after a computer and signalling failure had stopped trains on a 63-kilometre section. It then struck a stationary Iryo train. He described the authorisation as unexplained. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Urda and announced three days of national mourning.
